Opposing the government's efforts to make Aadhaar compulsory for access to social welfare schemes, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said obtaining the 12-digit Unique Identification number, which requires the holder to part with his personal bio-metric data, and using it to avail himself of government subsidy was a voluntary exercise and no one can force anyone to do that.
But then this is the deal for all the welfare activities. There is a slight twist in the tale.
Keep reading ahead to see that.
As far as all the non welfare activities are concerned, a Bench led by Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar on Tuesday found no fault with the government’s choice to make Aadhaar mandatory for “non-welfare” activities like opening a bank account or filing Income Tax returns.
The entire confusion regarding what is Aadhar required for and for what is it isn't is still on. We'll give you more updates on this pretty soon.
