A Love Story That Deserves A Perfect End.

Ageing

Ageing

As we grow older we become more weak, illness attacks our health and we all wait for death to come.

An old couple from Mumbai, are scared to live without each other and they want to die together. They live in a constant fear that they will die in illness, which will leave them helpless as there is no one to look after them.

Wrote Letter

Iravati Lavate, a 78-year-old retired school principal and her husband Narayan Lavate, an 87-year-old who retired as a state transport officer in 1989. Naraya said he has always been rebellious. He got married very late, at 36, forced by his ill mother and then the couple decided not to have a child. They have no regrets about anything.

They wrote to the president Ram Nath Kovind last December, that they are seeking "mercy death". They have no topics to speak with each other about and there is nothing to do rather than reading books on euthanasia and peeping outside the window.

Who's Idea It Was

Its was Narayan who brought up the idea of euthanasia. They also drew up a Bill on euthanasia and presented it to many politicians which include Sharad Pawar.

But currently there is no law that allows assisted suicide, but the Bill which they dropped can make changes as supreme court is likely to take a decision in 2018.

They are also a party of an unofficial Mumbai-based group called the Society for the Right to Die with Dignity. And if their Bill of euthanasia is approved they will hand over whatever little they have saved to the government.
