Steve and Hope Dezember met in 2011 for the first time on a date and soon realized that they were meant for each other. Steve took Hope on a candlelit dinner, accompanied by a delicious home cooked meal and a romantic music made the evening more memorable for them.
Hope couldn’t resist herself falling in love with him then and there. But, apart from that infatuation, there was something which she could not forget. Hope noticed that Steve struggled to open a bottle and was trembling such that it slipped from his grasp and fell down to the floor.
Steve explained that he had seen around seven doctors to figure out the reason behind the strange symptoms but none of the doctors he saw were able to diagnose the exact problem until four months later.
28-year-old, Steve, was diagnosed to be suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease which has no cure.
ALS is a neurodegenerative condition which affects the nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. Patients suffering from ALS slowly lose their ability to walk, move, and speak. Though there are exceptions, half of the patients diagnosed with ALS will die within 3 years and another 25 percent are predicted to die within 5 years after getting diagnosed.
Once Steve found out about his problem, he took Hope for a walk and told that she should not feel obliged in any way to stay with him.
Hope didn’t leave, rather both got married two months later and took a long trip across the US for their honeymoon.
In January 2013, Steve lost his ability to talk following which the couple returned to their home in Georgia. Steve lost 65 pounds and his appearance dramatically changed. He was forced to start using a wheelchair.
The couple then started the “Drive”, a project helping Steve to paint and pay for his medical bills. You can follow the Facebook page, “Hope for Steve” to keep up with the amazing couple.
