In a year when most mainstream movies failed to make a mark these movies made all the difference.

2017 has been a difficult year for Bollywood. Bollywood has always been the one to change with changing times. It is the main source of entertainment for almost everyone in the country. However, the mainstream commercial movies that claim they know exactly what the people want failed to do just that. Somebody had to step up to the plate in this situation.

Newton is not your average every day run of the mill Bollywood movie. It distinguishes itself with its clever use of humour in a depressing setting and the multiple political statements it makes. Newton was the official Oscar pick this year. It was a movie that said so much without having to say too much.

Who would have thought that the story of an old man counting down to his death in the company of his child in the holy city of Varanasi could result in a film that is equal parts laughter and tears?

Kalki Koechlin and Sumeet Vyas are two of the best actors we have. Director Rakhee Sandilya’s debut film makes you forget that you're watching a film. Aamir Khan did it again. In a film where he is just a supporting character, he still manages to deliver what is expected of him. A teenaged YouTube singing sensation desperate to break free of a violent father and her mother who is willing to take any beatings so long as she can protect her daughter and son.

Just the summary is enough to make you want to cry.
